Weaving Loom Controlled Lace on a Rigid-Heddle Loom

With Liz Gipson

Weaving is about finding the sweet spot in the intersection of sett, materials, structure, and beat. This is especially so with lace.

We will explore exactly what woven lace is and how to sett and select yarn to get maximum deflection, an important component in creating uniform stable “holes” in the fabric and those signature wavy lines.

Throughout the class we will discuss how to keep an even, open beat and the most popular structural forms associated with handwoven lace—Atwater Bronson and Huck.

You may have already created these forms without even knowing their weaverly names to create texture. This workshop will give you the tools to explore lace in its many forms.

The first day will focus on an introduction to lace, warping our looms, and the basics of using a pick-up stick.

The second day we will continue to experiment with various lace forms ending with a discussion of how to create shorter floats and finer setts.

This workshop is approachable for a new weaver who has warped and woven a couple of projects using the direct warping method, is familiar with basic weaving vocabulary, and has a sense of adventure. No experience with pick-up sticks necessary.

Two-Day Workshop

Day 1 – Saturday, August 22

Day 2 – Sunday, August 23
