Update on our Alamo Diné Food Drive

In November, some of our community members reached out to us to request assistance for the Alamo Diné. The Alamo Diné Reservation lies in a remote area in northwestern Socorro County, New Mexico, physically cut off from the main Diné/Navajo reservation.

Community Weaving Support

Members of Fiber to Finish Fiber Arts Guild of Valencia County and Las Arañas Spinners and Weavers Guild have assisted the weavers of this reservation to create a cottage industry to sell their weavings.

The guilds provided needed equipment, natural dye and spinning instruction and demonstrations, and support for children in fiber arts.

The guilds began the dialogue with Bosque Redondo National Historic Site to obtain additional free churro sheep and their fleece to support the continuation of fiber arts in the community.

A Call for Action

Because of the government shutdown in fall of 2025, the truck that delivers their food supplies had not come to Alamo in weeks. On November 6, Fiber Arts on 4th sent out a call to our 2,000 community members on our email list requesting donations to fill the gap from the lack of food deliveries and provide ingredients for Thanksgiving dinners.

Over the course of two weeks, we collected from our generous community members to provide Thanksgiving meals to 15 families.

With the van filled to the brim with turkeys, bags of flour, and more, the Fiber Arts on 4th and guild teams headed down to Alamo!

Cael Chappell, Myra Chang Thompson, Carla Wackenheim, and Sue Van Cleeve took the Fiber Arts on 4th van down to the Alamo Diné to deliver the donations. We were able to deliver literally over a ton of food from your donations. With the remaining funds, the Alamo Diné started a food pantry to continue to support the needs of their community.

We are constantly inspired by the generosity of this community! Thank you to everyone who brought in food, mailed in checks, and spread the word by forwarding our call-for-help email. We believe in the power

Thanks to all the volunteers who helped load and unload the donations!
